A Mattress for a 300 lb. and 150 lb. Couple, Backaches

​Hello Pete! We've emailed before and purchased from you previously. 
Right now, my husband (over 6' tall, maybe 300 lbs?) and myself (5', 140 lbs) need a new queen size mattress. 
In particular, my husband's been waking up with backaches. 
We both tend to sleep on our sides. Which mattresses do you recommend?

Welcome back.

A mattress for the two of you presents a couple of challenges.
1. The difference in weight between the two of you.
2. A mattress that’s soft enough for side sleepers that’s also strong enough to last a long time under 300 lbs.

1. For the average couple, with about a 50 lb. difference, rotating a mattress once a month for the first year and once every 3 months thereafter is sufficient.
For your weight difference, rotate your new mattress every month.
The better you stick to this regiment, the more evenly your mattress will wear.

2. There is no mattress that will do both jobs.
One that is soft enough at the surface will wear much too quickly.
For the sake of your financial health, your best buy is a mattress that’s strong enough to hold up well under 300 lbs. and a soft latex topper that you can replace as it becomes necessary without having to buy a new mattress.

We do carry a mattress that’s well made enough to support that kind of weight on a long term basis. My wife and I have had the ultra plush version for more than 10 years. And despite that we each weigh more than 200 lbs., it’s still in great condition. I recommend the Luxury Firm version of that same mattress.

If you don’t have a platform bed, you’ll need a new foundation for your mattress.
I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation.
This foundation comes in your choice of height, 5” or 8”, and in your choice of color…black, brown or gray.They’re very strong, supporting up to 1200 lbs., and assembles easily with no tools needed.
They are upholstered foundations, a bit dressy, but reasonably priced.

And finally, we recommended a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials.
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will prevent odors from developing and will enhance longevity.
