Hi Pete,
I'm looking for a mattress for my 3 year old girl. I'm not sure where to start. Could you give me your thoughts and suggestions?? Thanks, Shauna Hi Shauna, You start by avoiding mattresses made with memory foam. Most memory foam mattresses off gas toxic chemicals. All memory foams sleep hot and wear out quickly. A 3 year old child has to have firm support for growing bones. A firm, individually pocketed coil mattress is where to start. The independent suspension support that this type of coil system provides, will maintain the natural alignment of the body and spine…and self adjust to a growing body over the years. A mattress like this that’s upholstered with pure, organic and hypoallergenic latex will provide surface comfort that lasts for many years. Here’s a link to the Eco-Terra Hybrid Latex Mattress I’m recommending. https://ecoterrabeds.com/products/hybrid-latex-mattress?sscid=71k8_m5d12&utm_campaign=4342051&utm_source=share-a-sale I recommend that you order that in Medium Firm. Looking forward, about 10 years, your daughter will like start to take on a more womanly shape. At that time, she’ll want a bit more surface comfort to accommodate her widening hips. At that time, add a Soft Latex Mattress Topper to achieve that. Latex for Less has the best prices for those. At about the age of 12, It’s typical for girls to want a makeover for their bedrooms, which usually includes a larger mattress. So, if you have space in her bedroom, I suggest buying a full or queen size now, which will save you from having to replace the mattress then. If you need a new boxspring/foundation, I recommend the Magniflex KD Foundation, which comes in your choice of 2 heights and 3 colors. They’re very strong and assemble easily with no tools needed. It’s an upholstered foundation that’s a bit dressy, but not expensive. Shown here: Magniflex Foundations https://www.themattressexpert.com/foundations_and_bases.html#/ Also recommended is a waterproof mattress protector, which prevents perspiration from seeping into the upholstery materials. Keeping your mattress clean and dry will prevent odors and enhance longevity. The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is my recommendation…the one we use at home. It sleeps cool and works well.
